What's
Happening in the Garden:
Things
to Do:
 |
It's a good time to divide
perennials that do not bloom in early spring. Perennials like
daylilies, hostas, asters and mums can be dug and divided as soon as their
shoots first appear. |
 |
It is also a good time to move any
perennials that need to be relocated while it is still cool and the plants
are not in lush growth. If it is necessary to move a plant that is
already in lush growth, you can minimize the stress to the plant by cutting
it back, moving it on a cloudy day, giving it extra water, and misting it
several times during the day. |
 |
Don't trim spring blooming shrubs
such as lilacs, forsythia, quince and pearl bush until after they are
finished blooming because spring blooming shrubs set their bloom buds last
fall on last year's wood. Trimming them before they are finished
blooming will remove this year's blooms. After they have finished,
trim and shape them up so they will be ready in the fall to set their buds
for next year. |
 |
Don't prune trees now. Wait
until after they have fully leafed out and their bark is hardened. The
best time to prune your trees is in the winter and summer. Refer to
our pruning guide for more
information. |
 |
As always, weed and mulch.
You can put weed preventer down in problem areas, but don't put it where you
are expecting volunteer wild flowers. It will prevent them from
germinating too. |
