What's
Happening in the Garden:
Things
to Do:
 | Plan ahead for your
summer entertaining and make up pots for your patio. Give your pot a
few weeks to fill in before the event. |
 | Spray
for Bagworms now with Bacillus thurigiensis (BT). Soon they will build their protective
"bag" which makes them very resistant to insecticides. BT,
however, is very effective against bagworms and other caterpillar pests such
as tent caterpillars and tomato worms. Unlike insecticides which
require direct contact with the critter, BT is a bacteria that is ingested
by the caterpillar when it munches your plants. This bacteria is
deadly to caterpillars but harmless to other creatures, including us.
Since BT is ingested, it is effective against bagworms as long as they still
in their feeding stage. Since BT is deadly to all caterpillars, if
you are encouraging or trying to raise butterflies in your garden, be sure
to keep the BT away from your host plants.

 | The early spring
blooming shrubs have finished flowering and can be trimmed to reshape the
bush or to control their size. Remove some of the very old wood to
promote younger branches that will form good flower buds this fall for next
springs flowers. |
 | Inspect all
staking to insure that no bark is being damaged by ties. If you have
storm damage to any tree or large shrub, check our pruning
guide for hints. |
 | If you need to add
a bright spot, this warmer weather is great for planting the colorful
varieties of decorative sweet potato vine. It is quick to respond and
fill an area with color. |
 | While the weather
is still nice for planting, check at your favorite nursery for unadvertised
specials on plants that they would rather see at your house than
theirs. |
